In the second half of the fourteenth century, Stephen of Perm carried out an extraordinary missionary action in the far northern reaches of medieval Rus. He converted the pagan Komi-Zyriane people to Christianity. The uniqueness of this achievement was that the local population was illiterate. To make Christianization effective, Stefan had to learn the local language, adapt the runes used by pagans and create a separate alphabet based on them. With these actions, he copied what St. Cyril and Methodius had done ages ago. The fame of the great missionary was so great that shortly after his death, the great Russian hagiographer Epiphanius the Wise decided to write The Life of Stephen of Perm” (“Oration on the Life and Teaching of Our Holy Father Stephen, Former Bishop of Perm”). Apart from the account of the saint hero’s missionary and pastoral activity, which is dominant in the work, there are also many emphasis on his extraordinary intellectual qualities. Thus, „The Life of Stephen of Perm” is not an ordinary hagiographic work, but also a kind of praise of wisdom”.en
