Karol Wojtyła — John Paul II is one of the few theologians of the 20th century who was proficient in the use of two philosophical languages and methods: the metaphysical and the phenomenological one. The article shows how, in his early work — the 1953 habilitation dissertation, Wojtyła reflects on the usefulness of metaphysics and phenomenology for the ethical analysis of the acting subject — crucial for both philosophical ethics and moral theology.
